Do painters clean walls before painting? Yes. A professional crew dusts every wall, spot-cleans handprints and scuffs, and fully washes or degreases the walls that need it, like kitchen walls near the stove, bathrooms, smokers’ homes and rentals between tenants.
Paint won’t bond properly over grease, dust or residue, so cleaning is part of prep, not an extra. On our interior painting jobs, standard cleaning is included in the proposal, and heavy degreasing is noted separately. You don’t need to wash the walls yourself. Just clear the room.
How We Clean Walls at Three Levels
When people ask us “do painters clean walls before painting,” they usually picture someone scrubbing every wall in the house. That’s rarely needed. How much cleaning a wall gets depends on what’s on it, and on our jobs it falls into three levels.
- A dust-off on every wall. Even walls that look clean carry dust, cobwebs along the ceiling line and lint above the baseboards. Paint rolled over dust grabs the dust instead of the wall, so every wall gets wiped down first.
- Spot cleaning where people touch. Light switches, door edges, hallway corners and the wall behind a couch pick up hand oils and scuffs. Those spots get cleaned and rinsed so the new paint doesn’t sit on a greasy film.
- A full wash or degrease where it’s needed. Some rooms need the whole wall washed, not just the spots. That’s the next section.

When We Do a Full Wash
Do painters wash walls top to bottom? In some rooms, yes, and skipping it is how paint ends up peeling off in sheets.
Kitchens. Cooking leaves a thin layer of grease on the walls, heaviest near the stove and behind the range. You often can’t see it, but paint can’t stick through it.
Bathrooms. Steam carries soap and hair product residue onto the walls, and some bathrooms have mildew spots that need treating before paint.
Smokers’ homes. Nicotine leaves a sticky yellow film that bleeds through new paint if it isn’t washed off first.
Rental turnovers. Between tenants, walls usually carry a bit of everything: cooking grease, handprints, tape marks and scuffs.

What Our Proposals Include for Cleaning
The dust-off and spot cleaning are part of every job we do. They’re prep, and prep is part of the price.
Heavy cleaning is different, because it takes real time. A full degrease of a kitchen, nicotine removal through a whole house, or a rental that needs every wall washed adds hours and drying time to the schedule.
We’d rather you see that during the walkthrough than find out halfway through the job. If a wall needs more than a wipe-down, we’ll point it out and put it in writing, so you know exactly what you’re paying for.
What We Ask Homeowners to Do Instead
Do I need to clean walls before painters come? Usually, no. Washing them yourself the night before can actually work against you, because walls that are still damp, or that have a soap film left on them, aren’t ready for paint either.
Here’s what helps far more:
- Clear the room, or move furniture to the middle so we can cover it.
- Take down pictures, shelves, mirrors and curtains.
- Point out anything you know about: grease behind the stove, crayon on a kid’s wall, smoke stains, or mildew in a bathroom corner.
- Tell us if anyone has smoked in the house, even years ago, so we plan for it.

What We See When Walls Aren’t Cleaned
When cleaning gets skipped, the signs are easy to spot. Paint over kitchen grease stays soft and lifts off with a fingernail. Paint over dust feels gritty and can peel in patches within months. Nicotine and some water stains bleed right back through a fresh coat, sometimes in a few days.
Cleaning is only the first step. Patching, sanding, caulking and priming all follow it in a proper wall prep process, and skipping any one of them causes its own problems.
How We Wash Stucco Outside
Exteriors get cleaned too, just with more water. Orange County stucco collects dust, salt from the coastal air near the beach cities, and mildew on shaded walls. We pressure-wash it before painting, then give the stucco time to dry out, because stucco holds water and paint over damp stucco can blister.
FAQ
What do painters use to clean walls?
When painters wash walls, most use a mild detergent or a wall-prep cleaner, followed by a clean-water rinse, and a degreaser for kitchens.
How long do walls need to dry after washing before painting?
Indoors, washed walls usually need 2 to 4 hours before primer or paint, and stucco outside needs longer. We go by how dry the surface is, not just the clock.
